Creating Confident Caregivers® is a free class for caregivers of persons with dementia offered by the Tri-County Office on Aging. The program provides persons caring for a loved one with dementia at home with information, skills and attitudes to manage stress and increase effective caregiving skills. Two-hour sessions, led by dementia-care specialists, are held once each week for six weeks.
The series, based on the Savvy Caregiver curriculum, teaches participants a unique perspective on dementia. Participants learn new ways to understand the difficult behaviors resulting from the disease and gain tools to make their role as caregiver less overwhelming. The class emphasizes the importance of self-care for the caregiver and helps them understand that reducing their stress level can have a significant effect on the loved one. Respite care is available. Pre-registration is required and the program is for non- professional caregivers only.
